Origin of our popular fruits and vegetables

Along with homemade food at home,we often have biriyani,noodles,pasta,pizza or burgers. Most of them were absent from the diet of our grand grand parents menu. We now know that biriyani originates from Persia ( now Iran ) , noodles from China, pizza from Italy and burgers from Germany. But how many of us know that most of the fruits and vegetables we eat are from different countries. Let’s look at where our most familiar fruits and vegetables originated and when they spread from their source.

Here’s a list of 20 fruits and 20 vegetables, along with their origins and when they spread from their original locations:

1. Apple

   Origin: Central Asia (Kazakhstan)

   Spread: Spread to Europe by the Romans and to North America by European colonists in the 17th century.

2. Banana

   Origin: Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines)

   Spread: Cultivated in Southeast Asia and spread to Africa, the Middle East, and India by 1000 BC, and to the Americas via European colonists in the 16th century.

3. Orange

   Origin: Southeast Asia (China, India)

   Spread: Spread to the Middle East and Europe via trade routes by the 1st century AD, introduced to the Americas by Spanish explorers in the 16th century.

4. Grapes

   Origin: Near East (modern-day Turkey, Georgia)

   Spread: Cultivated in the Middle East and spread to Europe by the Greeks and Romans, and later to the Americas.

5. Mango

   Origin: South Asia (India, Myanmar)

   Spread: Spread throughout Southeast Asia by 4th century BC, introduced to Africa and the Americas by European colonists.

6. Pineapple
